President of the Foundation

Bartłomiej Osadnik is the founder of the Foundation, an orthopaedic surgeon practising in Poland. The idea of the Foundation derived from the need to spread the aid which he had provided as an orthopaedist in Poland and Rwanda. Apart from coordinating the Foundation’s activities, he teaches doctors in Africa new surgical methods. He likes travelling; however, helping others is the most fantastic adventure that has happened in his life.

Małgorzata Kern – “There is a song called ‘We Are the World,’ by a band that in fact has never existed but released only that single – the song performed by the most illustrious singers as part of the African hunger relief initiative. When I thought how much we could do to help, it always sent shivers down my spine. Although I am not a doctor like my brother Bartek or my friend Jarek, it was precisely the memory from our adolescence that made us decide that we would act too, and so the Afriquia Foundation was created. The guys, medics, are responsible for the know-how part of our project, and I am responsible for the financial and technical issues. This is an incredible challenge, but we get along. I am extremely glad that we managed to realise a teenager’s dream and help – it is worthwhile to have dreams... and later act.”

Szymon Pietrzak

Vice President of the Foundation

Szymon Pietrzak – graduate of the Faculty of Medicine at the Poznań University of Medical Sciences, specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology. He has over 25 years of professional experience in paediatric orthopaedics. His main area of interest are congenital and acquired lower limb deformities, locomotor system abnormalities secondary to cerebral palsy, spina bifida, arthrogryposis, and most of all lengthening and correction of limb axes. If he had not become a doctor, he would probably work as a guide or a gardener. He loves books and marzipan.

Foundation Council

Anna Knysok was born in Chorzów. She graduated from a secondary medical nursing school and completed a second-cycle degree programme in psychology at a faculty of social sciences. She was the Vice-President of the Solidarność Company Committee and a delegate to the 1st Congress of the Śląsko-Dąbrowski Region. She was arrested in 1983 on the charges of intending to overthrow the regime and publishing illegal letters. She was a member of the Tenth Term (Contract) and First Term Sejm. In 1997, she was appointed Vice-Minister of Health and the Government Plenipotentiary for Introducing Universal Health Insurance by Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek. In 2002, the Mayor of Chorzów appointed her to the position of the Director of dr J. Rostek Hospital. She has participated in the activities of the Polish Nurses’ Association and the Polish Psychologists’ Association.

Aleksandra Cholewa – executive director with a ten-year track record in mining and metallurgy in Central Europe, the Western Balkans and Africa. She has gained experience in analytical work, journalism, diplomacy and negotiations conducted in an often very complicated and difficult post-war reality. In projects implemented, she puts a special emphasis on sustainable development and pro-environmental innovations. She carries out many pro bono social activities in East Africa and Europe devoted to social and gender equality. She is an active member of International Women in Mining. She is a history and linguistics enthusiast.

Anna Masłoń-Oracz

Anna Masłoń-Oracz, PhD – strategic management and international business expansion advisor. She works as assistant professor in the SGH Warsaw School of Economics, and is the author of strategic management lectures and training courses she gives and provides on three continents (Europe, Africa and Asia). She is the head of the international AFROEU project and a member of the Board of Experts of Wintrade London. For many years, she has been involved in the EU development aid funding and investment market. Among other entities, she has implemented projects for Heinz, Danone, Raben, Torfarm, OBR PR, Statoil, Johnson & Johnson, Royal Unibrew, Ciech, Lotos, Grupa Żywiec, Nurticia, Agora S.A., Prima or Luxmed. She also served as Vice-President of the Management Board of the PKN Orlen Group – Płock Industrial and Technological Park, and was a member of the Supervisory Board of the PKN Orlen Group Education Centre. She is the Vice-Chairman of the Management Board of the Polish European Community Studies Association. She features in the Polish nationwide ZnaneEkspertki.pl database. She has studied for 10 years and gained experience for 17 years, including in non-European regions, such as Rwanda, Kenya and China. She has given over 100 speeches and lectures at Polish as well as international conferences, and authored articles in reputable journals and book chapters.

Łukasz Wiktor – I am an orthopaedic surgeon. On a daily basis, I work with both adults and children. I got my feet wet at the operating theatre as resident physician under the watchful eye of Bartek, with whom we now help those who need our help most in Rwanda. When I am not at the operating theatre, I spend my free time actively – cycling, travelling and walking with my dog. My passions also include good cinema, pizza and black humour.

Witold Pustułka – journalist. He started his work in 1989 in Trybuna Śląska. Then, for 20 years he worked in Dziennik Zachodni. He also cooperated with, among others, Polityka and Życie Warszawy. For twelve years he was the President of Wydawnictwo Górnicze, a company publishing scientific portals and journals. He is currently a private businessman specialising in public relations and strategic consulting. He is a political publicist and columnist who won many journalism awards. For many years he has participated in a lot of charity actions which he co-organised, among others, with Editor Krystyna Bochenek. He was one of the first persons in Silesia to get engaged in organising the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. He is married and has two sons.

Volunteer

Modeste Habiyaremye – first-cycle programme graduate with the title of a biomedical technician. For 11 years, he has worked with Polish missionaries in Africa (the Congregation of the Sisters of the Angels). He is a social worker with Heart Adoption/MAITRI responsible for medical adoption. As a volunteer, he coordinates the activities of the Afriquia Foundation in Rwanda. In his free time, he devotes himself to photography.

Anna Kern – media culture student at the University of Silesia. “I spend my free time taking care of my own horse and a dog taken from a pound. On holidays, I go kite-surfing and hike in the mountains. When I was a student in secondary school, I co-created the school newspaper Słowa(k) as a journalist. I am interested in travelling which I see my future in. In the Foundation, I deal with marketing and PR.

Daniel Halicki – recent first-cycle programme graduate of the SGH Warsaw School of Economics. In the immediate future, he intends to develop the ideas of corporate social responsibility and creating shared value in contemporary business. He takes singing classes, creates amateur electronic music and plays, whereas he satisfies his curiosity about the world by travelling all over Europe, serving as a volunteer in the Foundation, and working in logistics.

Julian Narimany - I study electrical engineering at the Technical University of Aachen, and between classes I work there as a research assistant in the production of modern batteries. I am passionate about technology, and I associate my future with electromobility and "green" energy sources. In my free time, I like to do sports and read books. I heard about the Afriquia Foundation from my friends and when I managed to find some free time, I decided to join the marketing team.

Jarosław Kurak – “I am defined by my passions: my profession as an anaesthesiologist, and my travels. Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to combine them. Unfortunately, I was too young, inexperienced, and there were no people around me who I could have realised that crazy idea with. Out of nowhere, three years ago Bartek Osadnik told me that he wanted to go to Rwanda in order to start cooperating with local hospitals. I reacted enthusiastically. Bartek is an orthopaedist and I am an anaesthesiologist, which means we make a complete surgical team. Could it fail? Well, yes. Neither of us is a fan of red tape. We were in a desperate need to find a person who would help us to get a grip on documents, permissions, invoices or certificates. And here comes Małgorzata – perfect, meticulous – a journal of laws with a human face on top of that.”

Cezary Grzesiuk – Polish producer, director and film editor, born in 1963. He owns the Blue dReam Film studio. He worked as an editor on many well-known films such as Colonel Kwiatkowski (1995), Quo Vadis (2000), Destined for Blues (2004), Little Rose (2010) or Imagine (2012). He was twice awarded the Golden Lion at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia for film editing for the films: The Haven (1998) and With Fire and Sword (1999). In 2016, he was decorated with the Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis by the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

Mateusz Majdan - Od zawsze wiedziałem, że będę lekarzem i będę brać udział w misjach medycznych. W Szpitalu Ortopedycznym w Otwocku - podczas specjalizacji z ortopedii - poznałem Szymona, który jeździł z Fundacją do Afryki. Od razu wiedziałem, że na kolejną wyprawę pojedziemy razem. Z przyjaciółmi z Fundacji łączy mnie podejście do ludzi i życia. Głównym obszarem moich zainteresowań są wrodzone i nabyte deformacje kończyn, szczególnie stóp oraz szeroko pojęta ortopedia dziecięca. Prywatnie lubię aktywny tryb życia. Jestem zapalonym amatorem rowerów, pływania oraz kawy.

Jestem absolwentem Wydziału Lekarskiego Akademii Medycznej w Gdańsku. Ukończyłem go w 2002 roku. Szkolenie specjalizacyjne odbyłem w Klinice Ortopedii Szpitala Klinicznego im.Grucy w Otwocku oraz w Oddziale Ortopedycznym Szpitala Specjalistycznego w Kościerzynie. Głównym obszarem mojej działalności jest leczenia operacyjne i zachowawcze schorzeń w obrębie stawu skokowego i stopy. Od dawna chciałem zaangażować się w pracę w formie misji w krajach w których opieka medyczna jest na znacznie niższym poziomie niż w Polsce. Pozwala to pomóc konkretnej , potrzebującej osobie korzystając z wiedzy i wyposażenia które nie jest standardowo w jej kraju dostępne. Świadomość realnego wpływu na jakość życia i sposób funkcjonowania w społeczeństwie takiego pacjenta jest dla mnie źródłem ogromnej satysfakcji.
